Visual Novel Translation Status (19/09/2015)

Subscribe to email updates by signing up on this page. You’ll get an email each time a post goes up on the blog (though you can go into your account settings and customize it to only email you VNTS updates)

Zap! Sekai Project released Sakura Swim Club this week. Bang! JAST delays Shiny Days again and Decay writes a rant-essay in response (it’s near the end of the post in our commentary section). Pow! MangaGamer had tons of updates (as usual! Thank you!).

Welcome to our weekly VNTS (Visual Novel Translation Status) series, in which we track visual novel translation updates in-house (we don’t rely on /jp/ posts on 4ch, for example) and post it for your enlightenment and enjoyment each Saturday. If you find any errors, or you think a project is missing from this list, please let me know in the comments. Any new updates are marked by orange text.

The Short Version:
Only the New Stuff

  • Beach Bounce – Adult version (MangaGamer) (NSFW) – Released! This game was released almost a month ago, but I failed to cover it. Take a look at the game/buy it here. (If you buy it from MG you’ll get the adult version + a steam key.)
  • Black Wolves Saga -Bloody Nightmare- – Lots of new info! TL: 55/65 scripts, Edit: 49/65 scripts
  • HaraKano – Re-added to the list and VNTL-Moon because the project hasn’t been completed. I’ve only followed the blog, and consequently removed the entry after the blog indicated he’d completely moved on to Mahou Tsukai no Yoru
  • Iinazuke wa Imouto-sama! – Patch released: Complete version 0.91 Patch
  • Ken ga Kimi – Handful of new info: TL: 115/122 scripts; Edit: 81/122
  • Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki (Koisaku) – TL bump: 46265/49257 (94%)
  • Sakura Swim Club (Sekai Project) – Released! Purchase it here!
  • Shiny Days (JAST) – Delayed
  • Starry Sky ~in Summer~ – Edit: 154/177 scripts

The Zakabox

Zakabox™ Commentary

「」 It turns out that Zaka is NOT dead! Sadly: he’s not able to write a Zakabox this week.

(Tl;dr: still alive, but dead to us)

Decay’s Musings

Today, I’m pretty frustrated. I’m not necessarily angry, but tired and disappointed. On the day of this writing, the 18th of September, we were met with a “surprise.” That being JAST USA’s delay of Shiny Days from September 18th to September 30th, digital version on the 25th. I’m disappointed because this isn’t really much of a surprise at all, it’s something we have come to expect from JAST. I’m tired because this keeps happening, it has happened twice now with Shiny Days, it has happened with Starless, it happened with Hanachirasu, it happened with Romanesque, it just keeps happening over and over again with everything JAST releases. And it’s frustrating because they waited until the last possible moment, yet again, to inform us. They want us to be understanding. It’s beyond their control, they say. There’s only “2.5” of them, I guess. They have their hands full with a website relaunch. The game is just too big for them to easily work with and create an installer for. There’s a whole slate of excuses they want to serve us, but should we really be understanding and accepting of this?

I don’t actually understand. JAST has been doing this for a very long time now. 18 years, in fact. They’ve worked with disc printers and have had physical game launches dozens of times. They’re familiar with how their partners in physical goods manufacturing operate, they know the ranges of delays possible for them, they should have a better idea of the timeframes they’re working with, and they’re capable of communicating this to us more clearly. I don’t get how they didn’t anticipate ahead of time a 16GB web download being a problem for them, when they’ve had all the time in the world to deal with this issue before it became an issue. There is also virtually no way that they shouldn’t know until today that they wouldn’t be able to ship the game out until 12 days later. I’m trying to work out in my mind how that makes sense, but I’m sorry to say that I can’t. I can’t actually understand how any of these problems are taking JAST by surprise.

There’s also the problem of how this affects Seinarukana. This was ostensibly slated for a September release. Not long ago I got a somewhat solid word that this was still on the books. I wasn’t fully sold, but stranger things have happened. But now with this delay, surely Seinarukana is affected as well. I don’t know the intimate details of how JAST operates, but I’m assuming they only have one partner for physical goods assembly and shipping, and right now all hands are on deck for Shiny Days. Even if everything was ready to go for Seinarukana, they will have to wait for Shiny Days to ship off before starting on that. So at the very least, we can rule off a possible September release for Seinarukana, and maybe October is starting to look like a pipe dream. At least this may finally give them an opportunity to actually market that game, which they weren’t willing to do before. But it almost seems like they just want to ship that one off to die before recouping what little funds it can with no further budget allocated to it.

JAST will tell us all that all of this is beyond their control. But the most frustrating part is that an awful lot of it is indeed within their control, and it us who have no control. We’re hapless as JAST takes us on yet another rollercoaster of hype and disappointment, and I think I’m ready to get off this ride. Chalk up one more casualty of the chronic JAST delays.

TAYsteful™ Thoughts

I suspect most of you are rapidly scanning the rest of this post before you jump into the comments and respond to Decay’s essay. That’s fine. I’ll save my actual commentary for next week. The paragraphs below are just for fun — go ahead and skip down to the comment box and whip out those keyboards!

Funny story: I got another email specifically asking if Zaka was either A) dead, or B) divorcing and leaving me. As far as I know, neither of those things have happened — he’s just unavailable atm to write a Zakabox. Probably.

Stephen King Update: Thank you (very much) to everyone who posted/emailed me advice for what my next Stephen King novel should be. The winner of the great SK Queue debate was “It“. The beginning has been quite slow (I’m at 22%), but it’s finally picking up now that the chess board has been properly set up. I won’t be reading much of it this week, unfortunately, because I need to finish “A Dance with Dragons” in order to get out of the horrible reading-more-than-one-fiction-book-at-once blues.

This week’s image comes from Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki! Great to see the project’s updates : ). Have a good week, everyone!

It’s JAST…I can’t say that I’m surprised they are doing it since forever. I’m tired of their excuses and incompetence, don’t expect anything from them, better, pretend that they don’t exist if something it’s released thats nice if not whatever.

JAST should just stop with giving out release dates that they have no intention of keeping. If they do that, they might manage to look a little less inept (probably not though). They also claim they’re tired of having to make up excuses, and don’t want delays, yet they never change. It’s just a bad joke at this point, one I sure many are tired of hearing.

While I can somewhat sympathize with JAST on the fact that releasing a huge game like this is probably not easy for a site their size, the thing I really cannot forgive them for is them constantly pulling release dates out of their ass and then having the audacity to time and time again delay the game practically on the day it is stated to be released.

It is especially bad when compared to their main competitor Mangagamer, who generally does not even set a release date on their games before they have not only been completed but also thoroughly beta tested.

The result of that is that it often takes a while for games to get official release dates, which also sucks, but really between having to wait a while for an accurate release date or having a release date that is almost certainly not going to be kept, I would choose the former option.

In the type of small niche market that VN games occupy right now, trust is an incredibly important thing for a company to maintain, and JAST is doing an incredibly good job of undermining their own trust at the moment.

Wow! I was actually planning to buy Shiny Days when it came out, but now I’ve lost any and all intentions of supporting JAST. I was willing to overlook the loli censorship and the first delay, but this is strike three. I have never bought a VN in my life even though I have the money, because they’re quite expensive, I’m very picky, and it’s always very hard for me to tell whether I’m going to enjoy a title or not. However, I’ve always been a huge fan of the School Days series, so I felt that I should support the company that was localizing a game that I knew I would enjoy. But after disappointing their audience so many times, there’s no way I’m giving JAST my money.

Oops, looks like we made a typo and Sumaga is being listed at 10% TL. It is currently fully translated and in editing, same as last week. I’m not actually sure how far along the editing is on that, I was actually under the impression that the editing was completed quite a while ago after Makoto did his pass, but maybe they’re not finished with it? That translation has had a long and messy history.

In response to the comments on Shiny Day’s delay, I will say that delays in of themselves are understandable. Sometimes shit happens, and you can’t do much about it. Well, I do believe that JAST could have mitigated some factors of the delays, such as their troubles with the digital download installer. But if their partner working on the physical version manufacturing and shipping has a delay, thems the breaks. The main thing I have a problem with was how this delay was handled. How JAST didn’t give a clear enough expectation that there could be additional delays, and how they didn’t notify us until the day the game was meant to ship that it wasn’t actually shipping. Delays should be clearly communicated well in advance, something JAST has had problems doing in the past. I hope they learn from the backlash and try to be more transparent with their release schedules, but I fear that it will have the opposite effect and they’ll communicate even less.

Your commentary on Shiny Days is excellent, and you’re one of the few people I know capable of spelling out their concerns so clearly and objectively. I’ve reposted your commentary in the JAST USA thread where it’ll get the attention from JAST it deserves, and I hope you continue to write such thoughtful industry pieces in the future. People like you who care about the industry, know it well enough to comment, and have the writing skills to critique it thoughtfully are indispensable. I hope you realize that.

“It” will be a great read Tay, you won’t regret the effort.

Wonder if something happened between Jast and Sumaga’s developer, and Jast simply doesn’t want to let anyone know.

The truth is, of course, that I am both dead and currently divorcing Tay. Keep this on the down low though, it’s a bit hard to explain to the authorities.

Is it just me or just the patch didn’t work with KoiRizo ToToTo pack?

Decay

That pack is actually a double fandisc for those two games and not a double pack of the base games themselves. Make sure you have the right copy of the game.

Ahh, nevermind, I also saw there’s a pack that contains all three and that might be what you’re referring to. It could be that the patch only works on the original version of the game, as it does not translate any of the additional content made for it.

I suggest uninstalling that and reinstalling using the original version of the game. Sorry if that’s inconvenient, but that’s the only thing I can think of as it worked fine for me. If this still doesn’t work, you should ask further on Fuwanovel’s tech support forum, where you’ll be able to receive better help.

Still not working. I hope there will be a solution for this.

Mine worked perfectly. You only need to Install “KoiRizo”, then apply the patch. Don’t apply any additional patch or it will crash

How to do that anyway? Mine is bundled when installed and cannot be installed separately.

I manage to solve it by downloading part on the original game and overwriting it to the game folder.

Is there any information on Mangagamer’s Umineko sprite? Will they use the classic, PS3, or the Pachinko’s? Because when I opened Mangagamer’s Umineko page the banner used the Pachinko’s sprite.
